What is Candida Overgrowth?

Candida is a type of fungus (like a mushroom) that is commonly called yeast. Our entire body is populated by billions of microscopic organisms including bacteria and fungi. Many of these organisms provide benefits to our bodies such as making and breaking down nutrients, supporting our immune system and making chemicals for our brain. A healthy digestive tract has a small amount of what would be considered “ bad bugs” such as candida and clostridium bacteria. These are kept in balance by “good bugs” such as Lactobacteria and Bifidobacteria.

Different parts of our body have specific and delicate ecosystems called microbiomes. When the balance of organisms in the microbiome is altered, we develop symptoms and even diseases. When Candida overgrows it is called Candidiasis or thrush.

Many different medical factors, diets and lifestyles can promote an imbalance in the microbiome such as:

  • A diet high in sugar, carbohydrates, and processed foods.

  • Antibiotic use

  • A weak Immune system or infection

  • Stress

  • Hormone imbalances

Our Approach

  • Changes in diet and lifestyle that promote candida growth

  • Break up the organism’s protective Biofilm.

  • Supplements to promote the microbiome balance.

  • Prescription antifungal medication when needed.

  • Detoxification/ Make sure you can remove toxins from your body.
