What is Mold Related Illness?
Molds and mold spores are everywhere, our homes, outside and in foods. Moist and humid environments, such as buildings that had a leak or a damp
basement are common sites for mold. Material such as cellulose, dry
wall, carpets and fabric are the food source for mold and needed for
molds to grow. One of the most concerning types of mold is Stachybotrys or Toxic Black Mold.
Molds produce toxins, called Mycotoxins to keep other organisms from their food source. Different mold produce different types of mycotoxins. These Mycotoxins can enter our body from our environment or from food and can be made by
mold living in our body. Once in the body, toxins set off a series of inflammatory responses that alter the immune system and result in symptoms.
Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome (CIRS) is the varied symptoms one gets from significant mold exposure. Some people are more affected by molds than others. Different molds are more toxic or allergenic than other molds.
Mold can affect a person in 5 ways:
Mycotoxins cause a wide variety of symptoms including cough, headache, brain fog, fatigue as well as altered immune system and increased risk of cancer.
Molds themselves can cause allergy symptoms such as sneezing, coughing and itchy eyes.
As a type of fungus, molds can live in our bodies such as sinuses.
Molds activate the immune system which leads to inflammation. An overly active immune system results in Autoimmune disorders such as arthritis and Lupus.
Most people suffering from Mold related illness also have digestive problems from Leaky Gut and Candida.
